The Piedmont Treasures bike tour crosses some of the most spectacular wine hills in the world, enclosed in the regions of Monferrato, Langhe and Roero. It's shaped as a ring with six stages of a medium difficulty level. The ring trip starts in Chivasso and finishes in San Sebastiano da Po. This biking tour unwinds in one of the most scenic Italian regions: Piedmont. Historically, Piedmont is one of the cradles of Italian culture: its territory is full of traces of a sumptuous past. Castles, palaces, churches and sanctuaries testify to the importance that this territory has had over the centuries. But this cultural heritage is only part of the beauty you’ll encounter during your rides.

The countryside that spans Monferrato, Langhe, and Roero is recognised by the UNESCO World Heritage list, its hills, vineyards, rivers, and woods draw a dream landscape ideal to be visited by bike. You'll mainly ride along country roads that will bewitch your hearts and, at the end of the day, you'll experience some of the most renowned wines in the world, and don't forget about the local cuisine.

Ride Highlights:
BARBARESCO

Cycling is an activity that keeps people fit, they say. A visit to the village of Barbaresco puts this sentence to the test. We challenge any rider to ride through the ancient village of Barbaresco without stopping in one of the typical restaurants to taste two of the most famous delicacies of the area, truffles and, above all, the wine which takes its name from this village.

"WINE IS SUNLIGHT, HELD TOGETHER BY WATER."

  • DAY 3: From Castell'Alfero to Nizza Monferrato
    87.3km | 824m | 896M | 5h

Embark on the Tour's longest and most captivating stage, spanning 85 km through a countryside where the ebb and flow of life are dictated by nature. The initial stretch presents a hilly and invigorating profile, promising a cycling challenge amidst the scenic beauty. A brief pause for coffee in Montemagno is not just a suggestion but a must-do—behold the breathtaking castle view that awaits. Montemagno's fame extends to its vineyards, particularly renowned for the captivating Ruché wine, a true local gem.

The second leg of the journey, though more demanding, unveils its own allure. Venturing into the Alessandria province, you'll make your way to Nizza Monferrato, a globally celebrated hub of wine production. Here, amidst the rolling vineyards, lies a paradise for wine enthusiasts—the regional "Enoteca di Nizza Monferrato." A pilgrimage for Barbera aficionados, this iconic establishment is not just a stop; it's an essential landmark in your Tour. Immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of flavors, and let the essence of Nizza Monferrato linger as a cherished memory of this extraordinary stage.

  • DAY 4: From Nizza Monferrato to Monforte d’Alba
    77.9km | 1,224m | 852m | 4h

This stage stands out as one of the tour's gems—a ride through the Langhe territory that promises an indelible and must-experience journey. The initial leg takes you through the mesmerizing landscapes of the Belbo wine Valley, a captivating canvas that has inspired the works of the Italian writer Cesare Pavese. His words bring to life the soul of these enchanting places, and as you pedal, you'll traverse hills with gentle slopes, passing through iconic villages like Cravanzana, Niella Belbo, and Dogliani. Notably, Dogliani is renowned for its Dolcetto production, adding a flavorful dimension to your ride.

The day's ultimate destination is Monforte d’Alba, a medieval village celebrated as one of Italy's most beautiful. Here, immerse yourself in true Piedmontese cuisine, savoring the regional delights, and find respite in a charming hotel that gazes upon the Barolo hills. The allure of this stage extends beyond the cycling; it's a holistic experience that encapsulates the beauty of Langhe and the rich tapestry of flavors, history, and hospitality that define this remarkable corner of Italy.

  • DAY 5: From Monforte d’Alba to Alba
    70.9km | 1,110m | 1,464m | 3,30h

You'll face on this stage an extraordinary day on the bike, traversing the captivating landscapes of the Langhe-Roero area—a UNESCO World Heritage-listed vineyard terraced marvel. Cycling through Barolo village, you'll feel like you're pedaling through a living painting, the first in a series of enchanting old villages, including La Morra and Grinzane Cavour, emerging like fantastical mirages amidst the vineyard expanse.

While the stage boasts challenging climbs, the moment you reach Alba, the ancient city reveals its treasures, rewarding your efforts. Alba stands as the global capital of white truffles and ranks among Italy's premier gastronomic destinations. Revel in the rarity of experiencing both beauty and culinary excellence in a single day—it's an occasion not to be taken for granted. This ride promises not only a physical challenge but an immersion into the sensory delights of the Langhe-Roero region, where every pedal stroke unveils a new layer of this remarkable landscape.

  • DAY 6: From Alba to Asti
    64 | 1,110m | 922m | 3,30h

Asti, an ancient town tracing its roots back to the Romans, stands as another captivating destination on your cycling odyssey. Today's journey concludes in Asti, renowned as the production hub of the sparkling wine, Asti Spumante. The stage leading to Asti is a bit shorter, featuring numerous short and enjoyable climbs that add a touch of excitement to your ride.

En route, encounter the charming villages of Barbaresco and Neive—inviting spots for a brief pause, whether to replenish your water bottle or savor a rejuvenating coffee. As the day winds down, relish the distinctive cuisine of Asti, immersing yourself in its unique atmosphere before gearing up for the final challenging stage. Asti, with its historical allure and culinary delights, promises to be a rewarding stop, offering a taste of the rich heritage and flavors embedded in this ancient town.

  • DAY 7: From Asti to San Sebastiano Po
    78.7km | 1,358m | 1,166m | 4h

As the saying goes, even the finest journeys must come to a close, but not before tackling this demanding ride. The menu remains consistent with the previous days—a terrain adorned with hills—but this time, you'll encounter some formidable walls. The pinnacle of challenge awaits at the Cinzano Wall, a 300-meter ascent at a 16% gradient. (Fun fact: The Cinzano brand, part of the Campari Group, derives its name from this very location.) Brace yourself for the last leg of the day, equally formidable.

Yet, rest assured, as you conquer the heights of the San Sebastiano da Po village, the breathtaking beauty of the panorama will evoke a sense of awe. After completing this tour, we believe you'll concur with us—Piedmont is not just a place; it's a state of mind. The challenges faced on these roads, the vineyard-laden landscapes, and the rich tapestry of flavors all contribute to an experience that transcends the physical journey—a journey that leaves an indelible mark on the soul.

A glass of heritage

Each glass of Piedmontese wine contains within it a rich history and tradition that has been passed down through generations. Piedmont is renowned for some of its high-quality wines such as Barolo, Barbaresco, and Nebbiolo, which contribute to its reputation as a region of great prestige in winemaking. In a typical year, the production might reach 3.5 million hectoliters, with a significant portion coming from the Langhe area.

While we take pleasure in helping to find the perfect utilization for a portion of the wine produced, it's important to mention that as far as we know, none of the cyclists on our tours has ever gotten drunk.

Travel arrangements

The best airport for arrivals is Turin-Casselle (TRN) (MXP): from there we arrange the group transfer on guided and supported travels. Other options are possible and we can help you select the best one to reach Chivasso where the tour kicks off.

The rides conclude in San Sebastiano Po. We will arrange a group transfer to Torino airport. Additionally, besides we offer the convenience of organizing private transfers directly to Milan MXP Airport.

Food & Drinks during stages

During the rides on guided and supported tour we plan at least one longer food stop in the middle of the stage plus one or more coffee stops. In the assistence van we have bars, gels and water.

For those traveling in self-guided mode, the area offers many dining options, both for short breaks and longer ones. The trails pass through small to medium-sized centers where you can find both grocery stores and restaurants. Be careful because in Piedmont, the food is very good, and it's easy to indulge in the delicious local dishes.

Necessary Gear

Our guests will get a pre tour info kit that gives useful suggestions on how to enjoy our trips in full. Here is a quick selection that might be useful at this stage.

  • We suggest renting a bike with us. But feel free to bring your own bike. Just consider bringing along a selection of model specific spare parts (ie. derailleur hangers).

  • The hotels have often a room for the bikes, and we will have a selection of tools to perform basic maintenance.

  • The ideal season to enjoy Langhe is Springtime (April and May) or during Fall, you would stunned ro ride both through blossom and foliage. Mornings are not too chilly and during day it is lovely riding with 20-22 degrees.

Summers are quite hot and dry, although occasional thunderstorms with heavy rainfall are not uncommon. During the hot season temperature rise over 30 degress, but it's always better to bring sun protection.

ITINERARY

  • 1 ARRIVAL DAY

Arrival at Milan airport (MXP) and transfer to Cortina (Veneto). Accommodation, bike-fitting and warm-up, and dinner at three-star hotel.

  • 2 CORTINA LOOP

    70.6km | 1,919m | 1,919m | 4,30h

The first stage has been designed to make it clear from the beginning the going of following, intense, days. We leave Cortina heading east in an anti-clockwise (contra relogio in the Ladin language) route to the first climb of our week: Passo Tre Croci, named after a legend about a mother and her 2 children who died on Passo while trying to reach Cortina in search of a job. Passo Tre Croci has been part of the Giro d'Italia route in 1966. It’s a 8.1km climb with average incline of 7.1% up to top. After it, we enjoy a short downhill to one of the most photographed spots in the region: the lake of Misurina, located at 1754m ASL. After a refreshment stop on the lake's shoreline, we face the main dish of the day: the climb up the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. It's a challenging 7km climb but the last 4 are those you'll remember most as the average incline is a tad below 12%. You will want Merckx's legs up here: Eddy won in 1968, on a snowy stage, and wore the Maglia Rosa: Tappa e Maglia (stage and Jersey in one shot) as RAI commentators use to say! Funnily, most every time a Giro stage finished up Tre Cime, there was a snow storm that made the stage epic. For sure as nice to watch as painful to ride. Once on top, we have a long way down to Cortina and, next, one last climb to the hotel: five kilometers to get us ready for a well deserved food break.

  • 3 PASSO GIAU AND PASSO FALZAREGO

    56,8km | 1,930m | 1,931m | 3,45h

The going is getting tough within the second stage: it's a short stage with two climbs, we take on the Falzarego pass as a starter an then the menù offers a real beast: Passo Giau. Falzarego is a smooth climb going up for 16.4 km averaging 5.6% incline. Good for warming up. Giau is a Hors Catégorie climb, one of those rare uphill that can change the whole course of a stage race. It's, in fact, a 10.2 km and 9.1% gradient ascent, ending at 2236m ASL. Certainly one of those trophies that a dedicated cyclist should take home! Once on top, we enjoy the awesome views and the lovely mountain hut and take a break for a well earned cappuccino and snacks. It's going to be for sure a cappuccino with a view: a 360-degrees picture that includes the twin peaks of Nuvolau and Averau, both above 2600 meters. We can take our time up there, and sip our cappuccino without rush: from the Pass is a 12km downhill road up to the hotel.

  • 4 RIDE UP PASSO FEDAIA AND FALZAREGO

    58,2km | 1,743m | 1,827m | 3,30h

Ready, Steady, off we go for a second time over Passo Falzarego. Now we know the consistent and smooth slopes and - just like the day before - this is only a foreplay before what we have to ride on this day: the Infamous Passo Fedaia. Fedaia is one of those iconic climbs of the Dolomites either for the steepness of the road and the beauty of landscapes we are surrounded by. Ascent is 12.8km long at 8% gradient. But what makes this climb so hard is its straight part - right in the middle - known as Malga Ciapela, a section almost three kilometers long, averaging 12% incline, but with many meters at 15%. Malga Ciapela is a nightmare among Italian amateurs cyclists and since last Giro d'Italia for Carapaz too: that's exactly where the Australian Jay Hindely dropped the at-the-time race leader Richard Carapaz to go get the Maglia Rosa Jersey and become the first Aussie to win the Giro. Up the Passo there is a 2km flat section with a lovely road coasting an alpine lake, before getting to a cozy restaurant: climb is over and for us it's time to make stop, take a rest, get a drink and let the colors of the sky reflected by the surface of the waters be joy to our eyes. Once our break is over, we just have a short downhill to Canazei, our second base in the Dolomites, where we will get a warm welcome by the three-star hotel with our privileged location to see the alpenglow sunset.

  • 5 THE SELLARONDA CLASSIC

    64.6km | 2,065m | 2,066m | 3,50h

Today we have the famous Sellaronda classic loop. Can you dream of anything better than this ride? The circular route, amidst fascinating natural landscapes, leads through some of the most attractive roads and well-known Dolomite passes and you know what's best of it: it's a 64k ride with no flat: you go up, or you go down. There are no other ways and that's exactly what the Italian amateur loves about it. You get your bike, you go out, you take on the Pordoi (2239 meters asl), then you take on the Campolongo (1875mts asl), then you take on the Gardena (2121mts asl) and finally you take on the Sella (2240mts asl). 4 Dolomites passes in a relatively short ride. Passo Pordoi is strictlyy twisted the history of the Corsa Rosa. Fausto Coppi, the Campionissimo as he was named, maybe the greatest of all Italian sportsmen, was first for 6 different times on the Pordoi and on 4 occasion he went on to win the Giro. Campolongo is the shortest with its 4k averaging 7.4% incline, leading us to the 1800 metres of the pass of the same name; Once at the top we are on the gateway to the enchanting Alta Badia, one of the most remote Dolomite valleys, far removed from cultural changes. In Alta Badia the sky is bluer, the grass is greener and the peaks are monumental. We descend to the bottom of the valley and from there we attack the 9 km of the Gardena Pass. The 9 km climb is the longest of the day, but it will be gentle and steady because the scenery that accompanies us is the best any cyclist can dream of: sweeping sights of the most majestic Dolomite mountains, including the marvelous Sassolungo, one of the most famous peaks in Alta Badia. After a short, fast descent, the last difficulty of the day attacks. Only 5.4 km separate us from the Sella Pass where we can finally refresh ourselves at the pass bar, coffee and cappuccinos await us while we can look up 3150 metres and see the Mountain that gives its name to the pass: according to many it is a real rock castle, according to others it is a large and majestic island reaching for the sky. The descent will be fast to Canazei while our mind will be intent on trying to catch some still images and take them with us to the finish line. We will hardly see so much beauty in the few kilometres of the Sellaronda.

  • 6 PASSO ROLLE, PASSO SAN PELLEGRINO, PASSO VALLES

    100,7km | 2,393m | 2,393m | 5,50h

Usually at Grand Tour races after a short stage there's a long one and here we go with first 100k stage. We leave our HQ to ahead south and the beginning is fast and slightly downhill up to old village of Predazzo whose origins date back to the 1035. From there we have the first climb on the day and it will be our longest ascent: the road goes up for 20.5k up to the 1935 meters over the Passo Rolle. We can split this climb in two section: the first is about 10k to the Alpine Lake of Paneveggio where slopes flatten a bit following the shore of the lake, afterwards it is another 9k to Passo Rolle. This second split is steeper with inclines peaking the 10%. If the punchy climb erodes our legs our eyes will be paid back by the stunning view of another iconic dolomites peak: the Pale di San Martino. After a short break in San Martino di Castrozza we head back on a 9k downhill to get again on our route. The descent is fast and soon we have another climb to Passo Valles, 6k at 8.2% gradient. At the top we are another time over the 2000 meters asl and again time to take some pictures. This is pure Dolomite riding: cycling here means never resigning yourself to the idea that after a descent a climb awaits us immediately. And it's just like that after the downhill from to Passo Valles. After the descent from the pass we cross the climb that connects Cencenighe to San Pellegrino. As soon as the road begins to raise, we immediately have 2 km with gradients of over 12%. After that the remaining 4km are 'easier' with an average gradient of 8%. Over the pass the sight of lovely church will not be a mirage but a sign that for today climbing is over. Ahead, only one long downhill left up to Moena and after that we hit back home following same road we rode in the morning. Another day has gone and anything will be nicer then coming back to our HQ in Canazei. Just like a real Pro after the queen stage relaxing and staying in the wellness area is a suitable moment to think back at what we have achieved in our day out: 3 mountain peaks and almost 2400 meters up: Giro D'Italia is often easier then this!

  • 7 PASSO DELLE ERBE, PASSO SELLA E GARDENA

    94.8km | 2,493m | 3,380m | 5,30h

Here we are at the last stage, but don't think the climbing fest is over. As keen cyclists we can never get enough of scenic roads and endless climbs. Just like at the Giro where the last stages are always the most treacherous, on the last day we have set aside another 95km, three passes, but above all the maximum elevation gain: today we are climbing 2500 metres. As soon as we leave hotel we go up the 11.7km uphill to Passo Sella from the south road. Once there, it’s up and down to Passo Gardena. What we get after the pass it’s a nice 26km downhill through Alta Badia valley before we take on the very nice Passo delle Erbe climb, a beauty that a lot of time is neglected for mere logistic reasons. It's for those in the know. Even the Giro only rode 3 times up to this majestic climb. The American Andrew Hampsten was the first at the Passo delle Erbe KOM on the 13th stage at the 1993 Giro d'Italia. We are still in the Dolomites and exactly like the name of pass itself evokes, the landscapes and nature are pretty different: it’s a green and wooded area as it’s all grass and flowers all around with less rocks all around. We couldn't figure out no better spot while sipping our last cappuccinos: The pass is beautifully set between the gentle pastures of Luson to the north and the meadows of Pütia, with the steep walls of the mountain to the south. From here we have access to one of the most precious natural environments in the Dolomites. Before heading towards the beautiful and pleasant town of Bressanone there is only the twisted and narrow 26 km long descent: yet another hidden beauty unknown to most, in fact the road plunges down into the valley following the canyon carved out by the Isarco river, which accompanies us to the last destination of the tour.

Ride Highlights:
Rifugio Auronzo, 2013 A.D.

Giro d'Italia 2013. It was May 25, but it felt like the middle of winter, amid snow, rain and gusts of wind. Resisting the temptation to manage the now certain success, Vincenzo stretched out with three kilometers to go, on terrible gradients, quickly getting rid of the very few who could initially hold his wheel. He advanced like a spectre in the blizzard and won alone, while the others spit their souls out for placings. He had managed to turn a comfortable triumph into a piece of great cycling. The next day, in Brescia, he celebrated the first of his two Giro d'Italia victories. Far away, in the GC, Ryder Hesjedal, who won the 2012 Giro, Michele Scarponi, Cadel Evans, Rigoberto Uran. And the most awaited, the team Sky flag bearer Sir Bradley Wiggins.

"I have always hated this climb: it always leaves you breathless, because you have no reference, I hate it and today I don't think I have changed my mind!"

Vincenzo Nibali, after his victory up Tre Cime

Event teaser: A cycle tour through the beauties of Sicily's Baroque, to enjoy its rich culture, traditions...and great cycling
Pantalica

Culture, food and architecture, but also the most varied and scenic road rides.

Sicily is the southernmost Italian region and the closest portion of Italy to North Africa. It's a unique region, known for its highs as well as for its lows. Exploring the island at the slow pace that cycling can grant is a must-do.

We'd say it can easily be a once-in-lifetime experience, but we are pretty sure that you'll be among the many repeaters.

Sicily as a whole is so much special that people always struggle to decide which area exploring first. But as lovers of Sicily - and cycling lovers - we suggest an area that we consider special for us who love exploring new places on a road bike: it's the southeast portion of the island, that features not only a great insight of culture, food and architecture, but also the most varied and scenic road rides designed around a theme: connecting the most important towns where the stunning Sicilian baroque architecture (and we'd say lifestyle) knows its best expressions, creating a special ambience in which restaurants, bars and little shops are like notes of the same song. We discover it all on a Recreational level biking tour, that can be also done on one of our e-bikes.

The island, thanks to its strategic position in the Mediterranean, has always been the land of conquests. Greeks, Romans, Byzantine, Arabs, and Normans are just an example of the ancient civilizations that, by adding their unmistakable layers of traditions, architecture, culture, made this island so special. Some hints of what we'll see? Syracuse, Ortigia, Noto, Palazzolo Acreide, Scicli, Modica, Ragusa.

But be sure that to enounce all the special places along this trip, we would need a separate website. Can you really tell you know a place and its culture if you don't connect places to food or wine? For sure, you can't in Italy. So why not connecting Modica and its special chocolate, Noto with the local ricotta or Avola with the amazing red wine Nero d'Avola?

ITINERARY

  • 1 ARRIVAL DAY

Arrival at Catania airport (CTA) and transfer to Noto. Accommodation, bike-fitting at four-star hotel. Dinner not included.

  • 2 NOTO LOOP

    77 km | 1,182m | 1,182m | 3,30h

The first stage is a loop to discover the stunning Val di Noto. Leaving the city behind us, we head towards the Cavagrande del Cassibile Nature Reserve. After 6 kilometers of ascent through the scenic hairpin bends of Avola Antica, destroyed in the earthquake of 1600, we arrive at the heart of the nature reserve. This place hides Europe's largest natural canyon and over eight thousand rock-cut tombs dating back to the 10th and 9th centuries BC.

A long but easy ascent leads us to Palazzolo Acreide, a Baroque town that became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002. From here, our return journey to Noto begins, right in the heart of Val di Noto. A long descent, characterized by typical Sicilian dry stone walls, will take us to another abandoned area after the terrible earthquake of 1963: Noto Antica.

  • 3 FROM NOTO TO RAGUSA

    74 km | 1,301m | 923m | 4h

We bid farewell to Noto by traversing the Val di Noto via the Testa dell'Acqua road. An 18-kilometer-long ascent leads up to Palazzolo Acreide. Surrounded by abundant nature: crops, pastures, farms, and a few small inhabited centers.

Upon reaching the Palazzolo Acreide junction, we head towards Giarratana, a small Baroque village famous for some of its Baroque churches and for producing a variety of very sweet and large-sized onions (sometimes reaching up to 3 kilograms in weight). We've now entered the heart of the Iblei Mountains, and a climb of about 10 kilometers will take us to an altitude of 800 meters.

After the summit, a long descent will bring us to the heart of Ragusa, where we'll spend the night.

    Accommodation: 4-star hotel

  • 4 RAGUSA LOOP

    70 km | 1,100m | 1,100m | 3,30h

Today's stage will alternate between vast fields and Baroque beauties. We start by heading uphill towards Balata di Modica: at the seventh kilometer, a somewhat challenging ascent begins in the first part and becomes much easier in the second.

Amongst woods, cultivated lands, and pastures, we'll once again relish the peace of this area in the Iblei Mountains. After 23 kilometers, our descent towards the beautiful town of Modica begins.

Modica, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, captivates with its stunning Baroque architecture and rich history. Famous for its chocolate and picturesque landscapes, this Sicilian town offers a delightful blend of cultural heritage and natural beauty.

After Modica, our journey leads us to Scicli, another gem in the Sicilian landscape and rich of Baroque architecture and charming streets.

After Scicli, our ascent towards Ragusa marks our departure from civilization back into the enchanting countryside. As we journey back towards Ragusa, we embrace the serene landscapes, leaving behind the urban bustle for the tranquil charm of rural Sicily.

    Meals: Breakfast

  • 5 FROM RAGUSA TO VIZZINI

    68.8 km | 1,039m | 962m | 3h

Today's stage takes us back into the heart of the Iblei Mountains. After around ten kilometers of warm-up, reaching Lake Santa Rosalia, a long but manageable climb begins towards the 1000 meters of Monte Lauro. The road from the lake to Giarratana is lined with typical Sicilian dry stone walls and vast green expanses. As we approach, the pastures give way to winding turns leading up to the mountain, amidst wind turbines and forests.

After reaching the town of Buccheri, we'll continue our day, pedaling through the surrounding hills towards Vizzini. A delightful dinner awaits us within an ancient natural cave, promising a memorable culinary experience.

Ride Highlights:
Sicilian's Baroque

The Sicilian Baroque style of architecture was introduced following the devastating earthquake of 1693. Whole cities had to be rebuilt. Splendid churches and palaces were erected in what has been termed the Sicilian Baroque style. The churches were often lavishly decorated with coloured marble and mosaic inlay.

“The loveliest region of Italy: a stunning orgy of colors, scents, and lights…a great delight."

Travel arrangements

The best airport to land is Catania (CTA).

For those participating in a guided or in a supported tour, a group transfer is scheduled to depart from Catania airport at 2 p.m. Similarly, for the return journey, a group transfer is arranged to depart from Syracuse at 10 a.m.

For alternative requirements, we can assist in arranging private transfers (that will be quoted separately) or suggest the most cost-effective transport solution.

Travelers on self-guided trips have to independently reach Noto.

The Catania airport and Syracuse are well-connected by both railway and bus services. From Syracuse train station, there are railway connections to Noto.

However, if you prefer a most comfortable and faster solution, we can assist in arranging a transfer that suits your needs best (the transfer will be quoted separately).

Please contact us for more information.

Food & Drinks during stages

For those participating in a guided or in a supported tour, during the rides, we plan at least one longer food stop in the middle of the stage plus one or more coffee stops. In the assistance van we have bars, gels and water.

Those riding for the self-guided tour can rely on our road book and maps that show the suggested bars or restaurants.

  • The hotels have in some occasion a bike room, bikes are anyway always stored safely. We have a mobile workshop with tools and spare parts.
  • Bring along a wide selection of clothes, including some full arm jackets, raincoat, leg, and arm warmers: there are a lot of hilly areas where the weather is never completely predictable.

Event teaser: Explore the hidden and less-traveled side of Lake Como, with its rich history of smuggling routes and clandestine activities, add a unique and adventurous dimension to your holiday

A Biking Tour along the quiet side of Como Lake

There was a time, in the aftermath of the Second World War and spanning about 50 years, when the border between Italy and Switzerland saw the passage of individuals we might now refer to as mules.

These individuals were not trafficking drugs; rather, they were clandestinely transporting money and goods belonging to affluent families and entrepreneurs into Switzerland — a fiscal paradise with an impenetrable bank secrecy. Referred to as "spalloni," meaning big-shouldered men, they earned this nickname by bearing the weight of both illegal goods and the associated risks on their shoulders.

Today, with such activities long ceased, they have transformed into romanticized figures who were not only well-acquainted with their mountainous surroundings but also the keepers of secret paths linking Lombardy and Switzerland.

In the spirit of these spalloni, we invite you to join us on a biking tour along the clandestine and less-traveled roads encircling both sides of Lake Como—both the Italian and the Swiss. We have curated a cycling experience that embraces the lesser-known, spectacular, and tranquil routes, steering clear of the mass tourism that inundates the lake's shores from spring to autumn. However, to completely bypass the alluring towns along Lake Como would be a missed opportunity. Thus, we strike a balance by visiting some of the iconic locales that have gained international fame among the jet set: Bellagio, Varenna, and Como. These gems are adorned with charming streets, historic architecture, and waterfront promenades, each possessing a distinctive character and offering a blend of culture, history, and beauty.

Our journey combines the thrill of cycling along the secluded Spalloni routes with the excitement of exploring some of the most renowned luxury destinations. And fear not, we have no intentions of engaging in anything illegal—rest assured!

  • 2 BERGAMO - VALSASSINA

    62.6km | 1,519m | 1,019m | 3,30h

Departing from the urban charm of Bergamo, your journey takes you through the picturesque countryside, following an old railway line that has been repurposed into a scenic bike path. Winding its way through the landscape, the route meanders through ancient stone tunnels, remnants of a bygone era dating back to the early 1900s. What makes this experience particularly enchanting is the absence of motor traffic, allowing cyclists to immerse themselves in the tranquility of the surroundings and appreciate the historical allure of the reclaimed railway route. We leave the cycle path at San Giovanni Bianco; from here, the road begins to ascend, initially gradually winding through a dramatic canyon carved into the rock. Then, the road steepens for the last 7 kilometers of the climb, culminating at the Passo Culmine di San Pietro at an altitude of 1280 meters. From there onwards, it's a descent all the way to the Agriturismo.

The real challenge unfolds as we face the ascent of Passo Esine Lario. This mountain pass beckons with promises of both effort and reward. The road gracefully winds its way through the landscape, treating us to panoramic views of the Valsassina valley below. Reaching the summit of Passo Esine Lario is a triumph, standing at an elevation that grants us a commanding view of the stunning expanse of Lake Como unfolding below. The summit becomes a platform for a moment of rest, allowing us to savor the beauty of our surroundings before the thrilling descent that lies ahead down to Varenna. Once a quiet fishing village, Varenna has retained its tranquil charm, escaping the bustling crowds of more well-known tourist destinations. 57,2km | 1,222m | 402m | 3,20h

Today route is heading north, after leaving our fancy hotel nestled between verdant green and blue water we arrive in Colico, at the top of the lake, where we will cycle along a stretch of bike path on the bank of the Adda River, right at the point where its waters, fed by the snow and glaciers of the surrounding Alps, flow into the lake. The colors between the icy waters and the surrounding greenery leave you speechless. We continue upstream along the river, on a smooth and enjoyable bike path winding through cultivated fields and in the middle of the glacial valley. We will reach Morbegno, a medieval city, an ancient commercial hub on the way to Switzerland. Morbegno is ideal for a break, to have a cappuccino in the central market square, and finally catch sight of the heights of the surrounding peaks. We resume our journey, cross the Adda, and pedal southwest to return to the lakeshore. Another 15 kilometers of flat terrain on secondary roads before reaching Gera Lario, where the 10 kilometers of steep ascent along the lake begin: every meter climbed will leave you stunned by the vastness of the water view. The well-deserved reward will be to arrive at the beautiful farmhouse for the night: you will rarely find a place from which you can embrace the entire lake with a single glance.

  • 5 SORICO - SAN FEDELE INTELVI

    76,2km | 1,393m | 1,792m | 3,50h

Today marks the beginning of another thrilling descent as we bid farewell to the charming agriturismo, embarking on a 10-kilometer downhill journey that gracefully leads us back to the enchanting coast of Lake Como. The meticulously designed track runs alongside the lake for approximately 35 kilometers, immersing us in serene surroundings and charming lakeside villages that exude tranquility. The beauty of Lake Como unfolds before us, revealing its crystal-clear waters and the timeless allure of the surrounding landscapes.

At the 37-kilometer mark in Menaggio, our journey takes an even more picturesque turn as we encounter a delightful cycle lane that traces the coast from Lake Como to Lake Lugano. This scenic path, once a railway built at the beginning of the last century, played a pivotal role in establishing Como and its lake as a popular tourist destination, particularly among the Swiss. The route meanders to Porlezza, the last main town before the Swiss border. Nestled along the splendid shores of Lake Lugano, Porlezza invites us to take a pause for a coffee or gelato at Gelateria Visconti—one of the finest ice cream shops in the area.

Refreshed from our break, the route continues along the east coast of the lake, leading us to the final climb of the day—a challenging 8-kilometer ascent to Pellio Intelvi. As we conquer this climb, the panoramic views unfold, rewarding our efforts with sweeping vistas of the surrounding landscapes.

But before reaching our final destination, we have the opportunity to uncover the hidden little gem of Erbonne.

Erbonne was once a fairly isolated village; up until the 1960s, there was no road connecting the village to the Italian side. Inhabitants had to depend on Scudellate for all services, including churches, schools, and graveyards. Due to its remote location, Erbonne became a resting place for bootleggers. Smuggling activities were so intense that the Guardia di Finanza built a barracks to monitor the area. Today, this barracks has been transformed into a museum of contraband, preserving the history and stories of the region's smuggling past.

  • 6 SAN FEDELE - SCUDELLATE

    58.6km | 1,685m | 1,494m | 3,10h

Val Intelvi is indeed one of those places that appears to have experienced a brief encounter with tourism, leaving behind a tranquil and picturesque valley nestled between the mountains and lakes, serving as the boundary between Switzerland and Italy. The well-maintained and nearly traffic-free roads contribute to the serene ambiance of the region. These mountains, while now offering a peaceful landscape, were once the stage for intense illegal activities carried out by smugglers. With limited opportunities for regular employment, smuggling became a livelihood necessity for some.

Before bidding farewell to the valley, the route takes a climactic ascent to Sighignola at the Balcone d'Italia viewpoint. This 5.3-kilometer climb is rewarded with a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view over Lake Lugano and the Swiss Alps. The stunning scenery from this vantage point leaves a lasting impression.

Descending back to Lanzo, the path meanders from the valley toward Lake Lugano, passing through the ancient and now abandoned border crossing of Arogno. Entering Swiss territory, the journey continues along the lake with well-marked cycle paths, eventually ascending towards the semi-abandoned hamlet of Scudellate. Despite its modest population of only 22 residents, Scudellate boasts several tourist facilities, drawing visitors with its enchanting appeal—secluded, surrounded by silence, and embraced by the beauty of woods and meadows.

  • 7 SCUDELLATE - BELLAGIO

    61,7km | 1,195m | 1,370m | 4,10h

The final day of our short break, tracing the routes of the Spalloni, begins with the bittersweet departure from the secluded haven of Scudellate, a remote and tranquil corner of the earth that one can't help but regret leaving.

The journey kicks off with a long descent, almost 18 kilometers, retracing the same route ridden the day before, leading us back to the enchanting shores of Lake Como.

It's a delightful 40-kilometer ride along the lake, offering marvelous and charming views of the serene blue waters on one side and the verdant cliffs of the mountains on the other. Venturing through the ancient villages, each populated for centuries by people engaged in hunting, fishing, farming, and, of course, smuggling, we witness a living history.

In Menaggio there is a short ferry boat transfer crossing the lake to the famous Bellagio. The little cruise becomes a perfect spot for capturing dramatic photographs. Once landed on the coast a last sightseeing climb to the Ghisallo and a visit to the Museum, onwards just ride back downhill to the town and the beauty of Lake Como bids us a fond farewell, leaving us with memories of a journey steeped in history, charm, and the captivating allure of the Italian lakeside.

  • 8 FAREWELL AND DEPARTURE DAY

Last Breakfast with a view to the marvellous sight in front of us: you will embrace all the mountain peaks, the green valleys and blue water which have been the backfround the our cycling journey.

Your stay, part of the tale

It is easy to get swept away by the allure of the Lago di Como, the region has been a favorite  tourist spot for decades, with its luxurious five-star lakeside hotels and fancy mansion. Our itineraries go deeper, avoiding the crowds and scoping out off-the-beaten-path places that allow travelers to fully immerse themselves in the beauty and culture of the region. Accommodations were carefully chosen to permit our travelers to discover a different side of Lago Como: both the small  hotels and the mountain lodges permit our guests to stay in stunning and hidden corners and enjoy breathing landscapes and good food.

Food

Eat like locals

Immerse yourself in the region's culture

While Lombardy is predominantly recognized for Milan, a global hub for finance and fashion, the region, in truth, has deep-rooted agricultural origins.

Northern Lombardy boasts some of the highest European mountains, shaping a distinctive mountain economy. In these rugged terrains, the culinary tradition aligns with the demands of mountain work—offering simple yet flavorful recipes with a high caloric content to fuel the demands of the challenging environment.

One wonderful example are Pizzoccheri: a traditional flat buckwheat pasta cooked with potatoes, cabbage, and layered with cheese and garlic-infused butter. And what about Risotto and Polenta? Once working class food, nowadays a delicacy. Lombardy is also renowned for its cheeses, such as Gorgonzola and Taleggio, which find their way into many dishes.

Indulging in rich dishes on our active trip is guilt-free, justified by the effort we put into every pedal stroke.

ITINERARY

  • 1 ARRIVAL DAY

Arrival at Palermo airport and group transfer to Castellammare del Golfo. Accommodation and bike fitting at a four-star hotel.

  • 2 FROM CASTELLAMMARE DEL GOLFO TO NUBIA SALTPANS

    71km | 1,334m | 1,360m | 3,30h

Stage with medium difficulty level. Left Castellammare del Golfo, our route features a continuous up and down for about 30 km. Then a long and spectacular hairpin climb will take us to the small village of Erice, considered as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. A cappuccino break in Erice is mandatory, especially when accompanied by a local specialty like the Genovesi cookies. Tasty, right? After this sweet break, we'll descend to Trapani, one of the most important towns in Sicily, and famous for the centuries-old marine salt production.

Our hotel is not far from there, and in the last 6km of our ride, we can take a chance to admire the stunning salt pans of the natural reserve of Trapani and Paceco, visit the Museum of Salt and learn about the "white gold" that drove the local economy for hundred years. Overnight in Saline di Nubia (Trapani).

    Accommodation: 4-star hotel

    Meals: Breakfast | Dinner

  • 3 FROM NUBIA SALTPANS TO SELINUNTE

    95.7 km | 318m | 262m | 4h

On this day, we'll ride all along the coastline of Western Sicily. Left Trapani, after 25 km, we'll reach Marsala, sea town known for the homonym Marsala wine, a fortified wine famous all over the world, but also for being the landing town of the "Expedition of the thousand": the campaign undertaken in 1860 by Giuseppe Garibaldi that overthrew the Bourbon Kingdom of the Two Sicilies (Naples) and reunited southern Italy and Sicily with the central and northern part.

After leaving Marsala, we continue on to Mazara del Vallo, a captivating town blending history and diverse cultural influences from Phoenicians to Normans. Its charming historic center features winding streets and ancient architecture, including the stunning Cathedral of Saint Vitus. The town's bustling port boasts one of Europe's largest fishing fleets and the renowned Dancing Satyr Museum. Mazara delights visitors with its fusion of authentic Sicilian and Arabic cuisine, especially its exquisite seafood dishes. This town's rich history, natural beauty, and welcoming ambiance make it an enchanting destination. The last 30 kilometers trace the coastline to Selinunte, renowned for its majestic ruins of ancient Greek temples, silent witnesses to a glorious past.

    Overnight in Selinunte.

    Accommodation: 4-star hotel

    Meals: Breakfast | Dinner

  • 4 FROM SELINUNTE TO SAMBUCA DI SICILIA

    72.9 km | 1,067m | 876m | 4,15h

Out of Castelvetrano we'll keep exploring the wildest areas of western Sicily, through the hilly countryside of the Belice Valley, for us cyclists a region where scenic roads go through vineyards, but historically an area of great interest, as it was totally destroyed by an earthquake in 1968. We'll see around us the indelible signs of that disaster either in the landscapes and in the memories of the local population: from the small village of Partanna, and for the next 30 km we'll mostly encounter ghost villages, aside to the ever present vineyards and pastures. Noteworthy, the suggestive Cretto di Burri (or Cretto di Ghibellina): a huge land artwork, built as a form of memorial on the ruins of the town of Gibellina and conceived by the artist Alberto Burri, that has followed the former street plan covering the village with a white concrete maze.

...it is a sort of concrete labyrinth, which, seen from above, is similar to the maze of lies in which the judges had to orient themselves to find the thread of the investigation" - Alberto Burri Past this artwork, our ride will continue through the vineyards of Belice, crossing the important wine towns of Poggioreale, Salaparuta, Santa Margherita del Belice up to Sambuca di Sicilia, our destination. A day rich in culture ends in a comfortable accommodation at Sambuca di Sicilia.

    Accommodation: 4-star hotel

    Meals: Breakfast | Dinner

  • 5 FROM SAMBUCA DI SICILIA TO CORLEONE

    80 km  | 1,400m | 1,043m | 4,40h

Today we'll face a demanding stage in one of the wildest area of the island, very poor in settlements. And during our ride, we will encounter only two villages. Left Sambuca di Sicilia we'll ride on a continuous up and down across the Sicani Mountains up to Chiusa Sclafani, a small village active in the cherries' production (capable of 3800 quintals/year), but also rich in more typically Mediterranean products like olives and peaches. Up and down again to Palazzo Adriano, a village founded in the XV century by Albanian emigrants and known for being the film set of Nuovo Cinema Paradiso, the masterpiece of Giuseppe Tornatore which won an Oscar in 1990. Nothing more fascinating than having a break right there! Maybe with cappuccino and "cuddureddi" - a sweet pastry characterized by a filling of cooked wine and almonds. So much tasty! Past Palazzo Adriano, nature becomes the unique protagonist, and riding through pastures, cultivated fields and eventually forests we'll reach Corleone,

If you're a fan of the Godfather trilogy, this name will remind you for sure the movies directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The movies were inspired right by this place - Corleone - which has gained notoriety because of the mafia. However, if you speak to the residents of the town, they'll tell you they don't know anyone belonging to that criminal organization. And that the mafia itself doesn't actually exist. And of course the big business of mafia doesn't take place in the small center, where there's a lack of possible business opportunities, but in the big towns, like Palermo.

Actually, Corleone was the town where the main mafia's families used to live. We don't agree too much with that local way to analyze this very complex organization and have our opinions, which we'll be of course happy to share with you. The hotel, a comfy four-star, is 5 km out of the village.

    Accommodation: 4-star hotel

    Meals: Breakfast | Dinner

  • 6 FROM CORLEONE TO MASSERIA ROSSELLA (PIANA DEGLI ALBANESI)

    56.6 km | 1,053m | 952m | 3,10h

Another hilly stage. Past Corleone, we'll ride onto the rolling hills through the countryside up to our hotel, situated under the limestone massif of Rocca Busambra, and covered by the biggest forest in western Sicily: the Ficuzza forest. A peaceful place to recover.

    Accommodation:Agritourism

    Meals: Breakfast | Dinner

  • 7 FROM MASSERIA ROSSELLA (PIANA DEGLI ALBANESI) TO PALERMO

    54.2 km | 742m | 1,439m | 3,10h

Short stage on our last day: this would give you some more time to visit Palermo, a really stunning place, you'll agree with us. Left our hotel, we'll reach Piana degli Albanesi, considered one of the most important Arbëreshe colonies (decedents of Albanian refugees) in Sicily.

Locals maintain the typical traits of Albanian culture, preserving their language, traditions, and religion. Piana degli Albanesi is also known for being the best cannoli place, and after tasting this delicacy you will agree with the famous sentence of Peter Clemenza - right-hand man of Vito Corleone in the Godfather - when he said: "leave the gun, take the cannoli". Past Piana degli Albanesi, we'll approach the Palermo area.

The hilly landscapes step aside to show us the sea and the coastline. Before reaching Palermo, we'll pass through the village of Monreale, famous for its magnificent Cathedral, a Sicilian masterpiece built during the Middle Age, a perfect example of coexistence between Islamic, Byzantine and Romanesque cultures. We are 7 km far from Palermo. Our hotel is situated in the heart of the town. A perfect position to experience a bit of the Sicilian lifestyle, walking through the picturesque markets of Ballarò and Vucciria, tasting the amazing Sicilian street-food and feeling the warmth of this friendly population. A note for those either on the guided or self-guided tour: we offer the opportunity to get an extra night at Palermo (check in the 'ON REQUEST' items). And we warmly suggest taking it!

Handpicked hotels

Your stay, part of the tale

In the "wildest" part of the island, our choice of hotels aims to showcase how different the western coast is from the eastern one. That's why we'll be staying within walking distance from the spectacular salt flats of Trapani, amidst the vineyards of the Belice Valley, close to Europe's largest archaeological park, or even in an ancient farmhouse amid a clearing.

Food

  • Marsala Wine Firriato

  • Pane e Panelle Palermo

  • Cannolo Piana degli Albanesi

Eat like locals

Immerse yourself in the region's culture

The cuisine of western Sicily is a vibrant tapestry of diverse flavors and rich culinary traditions. From the shores of Trapani to the heart of Marsala, seafood plays a central role, with dishes like fish couscous reflecting the region's Arab influence.

Another typical dish is caponata, a sweet and sour eggplant-based delicacy. Moving into the Palermo area, one can find various types of street food such as pane e panelle, potato croquettes known as crocchè, or chickpea fritters. It's essential to mention the renowned Marsala wine and the delightful ricotta cannoli from Piana degli Albanesi.

Ride Highlights:
Western Sicily

The West coast of Sicily saw invaders for millenia. The Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and Normans coveted its rich fishing grounds, hilltop vineyards and coastal salt pans, which all influenced the landscape and culture of the area. Even the British have left their mark, with 18th-century entrepreneurs attracted here and made their fortune with Marsala, one of the most famous sweet wines in the world.

“Sicily has suffered thirteen foreign dominations from which it has taken both the best and the worst. The sequence of different cultures has made Sicily a fascinating place, quite unlike any other."

Travel arrangements

The best airport to land is Palermo (PMO).

For those participating in a guided or in a supported tour, a group transfer is scheduled to depart from Palermo airport at 2 p.m. Similarly, for the return journey, a group transfer is arranged to depart from Palermo at 10 a.m.

For alternative requirements, we can assist in arranging private transfers (that will be quoted separately) or suggest the most cost-effective transport solution.

Travelers on self-guided trips have to independently reach Castellammare del Golfo.

The Palermo airport and Castellammare del Golfo are connected by both railway (5-6 trains per day from Palermo airport to Castellammare del Golfo) and bus services (Autoservizi Russo).

Necessary Gear

Our guests will get a pre tour info kit that gives useful suggestions on how to enjoy our trips in full. Here is a quick selection that might be useful at this stage.

  • We suggest renting a bike with us. But feel free to bring your own bike. Just consider taking along a selection of model specific spare parts (ie. derailleur hangers).

  • The hotels have in some occasion a bike room, bikes are anyway always stored in a safe way. We have a mobile workshop with tools and spare parts.
  • Bring along a wide selection of clothes, including some full arm jackets, rain coat, leg and arm warmers: there are a lot of hilly areas where the weather is never completely predictable.
